What can YeAABA do for you?

There is a range of courses open to YeAABA members both at Indoor and Open Water disciplines.

Without technical officials, competant boatmen and lifesavers we cannot run our open water events, and we need to have a working pool (no pun intended) of people to ensure that we can organise and staff any swims that we put on

If you would like more information on any of these courses, or would like to put yourself forward for a specific coourse then please contact training@yeaaba.org in the first instance.

There are also a number of general courses, such as First Aid, and Wellbeing and Protection Officer training which can be useful for both Indoor and Outdoor scenarios.

Where any role within the club involves working with children or vulnerable adults, the the holder will also need to undergo a successful PVG check, prior to commencing in that role.

Have a look at what we have to offer and if you are interested in volunteering with YeAABA, then complete the application form at the bottom of this page. There is no cost involved as YeAABA will cover the SASA registration Fee, so that you are insured.

Opportunities Galore

  • Blue Boat Handlers

This duty involves launching and retrieving the escort boats to and from the Boat shed. Boat handlers will navigate a course that swimmers will follow in championship races and will work as a team with a lifesaver as a crew member. Boat handlers will also cover safety at Harbour Training sessions. There will be training provided by YeAABA regardless of volunteer’s experience with the outcome of having confident, competent boat handlers operating the escort boats.

  • Rib Operators

This duty will be a progression from boat handling which will involve launching and retrieving the RIB Fast Rescue Craft. This requires RYA2 certificate as a minimum however there will be opportunities for members to undertake this 2-day course to achieve the qualification. There would be ongoing inhouse training on how to navigate championship swims and rescue retiring swimmers with safety and environment paramount.

  • Technical Officials

The following Technical Officals positions are available:

    Timekeepers

Open Water Judge 1 (Scottish Swimming Qualification)

    Technical Official (British Swimming Qualification)

Open Water Referee (British Swimming Qualification)

    Safety Representative (Scottish Swimming Qualification)

Safety Officer (Scottish Swimming Qualification 19 years old +)

  • Life Savers

As the name suggests this role is important in supporting swimmers safely throughout an event and especially in the event of a swimmer needing to retire from a swim or an emergency occurring. First Aid training is desirable but not mandatory unless that role is on land or on Fast Rescue Craft. Yeaaba can arrange First Aid courses for this training should it be requested. Throw Rope training is a must, and this is completed in house in approximately 2 hours at the Clubhouse. Lifesavers can be in and an Escort Craft, Fast Rescue Craft or on land so there will be training provided for each of these positions.

  • First Aid

YeAABA organises an Emergency First Aid Course for its interested volunteers. They are run when sufficient numbers are available to make the course viable.

It is run by an accredited trainer and results in a certificate being awarded on sucessful completion which is valid for 3 years.

The first aid training is essential for any of the boat crew or volunteers on harbour duty to ensure the welfare of our swimmers are looked after.

Contact the training officer via training@yeaaba.org to find out when the next course is being run and to register your interest.

  • Harbour Duty Person

This role requires someone who is First Aid and Throw Rope trained. Give swimmers access to the clubhouse changing rooms/showers and switching Hot Water and radiators on and off. Placing Alpha Flag at Harbour mouth when swimmers are ready to enter the water and returning it to clubhouse once last swimmer is out of the water. Set out life rings and get Throw Rope prepared at start and returned at end of session. Open window shutters to air the building and close and lock up at the end. Ensure Buoyancy Aid is worn when signing swimmer’s times in and out of the water. Ensure only Yeaaba or SASA registered swimmers gain access to clubhouse. Ensure First Aid box is available and stocked. If required call 999 in an emergency. Complete a check on changing room heaters and rubbish bins and dispose of any rubbish. Walk around building and report any damages to a committee member.

  • VHF Radio Training

The VHF Radio Course is used to teach the Phonetic Alphabet and the correct operating procedures for the VHF radios that are used by YeAABA whilst out on the water during training or during championship swims.

They provide boat to shore communications and can also be used to contact the Harbour Master / Coastguard in an emergeny.

It is therefore vital that operators are aware of the correct procedures for using these radios.

If you would like to register an interest, then contact the training officer in the first instance via training@yeaaba.org

  • Organisational Teams

You can join one of out teams that help keep the lub running smoothly

  • Wellbeing & Protection Training

The Child Wellbeing and Protection in Sport course is for coaches and sports volunteers. It is the recognised course for safeguarding training in sport and has been developed and certificated by sportscotland and Children 1st.

It comprises of an eLearning session

(Module 1), which must be completed first,

(Module 2) followed by a 3-hour face-to-face or virtual course

  • Throw Rope Training

These courses are run as required by the club, and train the volunteers in the correct use of the throw ropes. This training is essential for anyone doing harbour duty and will take about an hour of your time.

If you are interested in attending a Throw Rope training session, please contact the training officer in the first instance via training@yeaaba.org
